Job Summary
The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving all meals, including snacks to the children in the program. S/he ensures that there is adequate supply of food in the program by updating inventory regularly and putting in orders for food and other kitchen supplies. S/he is responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen by ensuring that utensils are washed at the appropriate temperature. S/he is responsible for the supervision and training of other volunteers or staff assigned to the kitchen.
Essential Responsibilities
- To be responsible for preparing nutritious meals for the children
- Prepare and distribute meals according to the planned menu and schedule
- Prepare meals for children with special diets

- To be responsible for maintaining adequate food and supplies
- Update inventory (food products, paper goods, cleaning supplies)
- To be responsible for maintaining a sanitary environment in the kitchen
- Washing all utensils at the standard temperatures
- Stoves cleaned daily
- Refrigerators cleaned weekly or as needed Freezers cleaned monthly or as needed

- Food products stored on shelves
- Comply with agency’s established procedures
- Participate in offered trainings, workshops, In-Service days
- Maintain certification requirement and proof of attendance in professional activities.
- Check their La Peninsula email on a regular basis.
- And other related duties as assigned, at the discretion of the Educational Director and /or Management

Qualifications and Skills

- High School Diploma or GED
- NYC DOH Food Handler Certificate
- Bilingual preferred: (Spanish, French, Arabic)
- Knowledge of DOH Article 47 rules and regulations
- Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards
- Demonstrated ability to read and follow recipes, and to prepare foods from scratch
- Excellent cooking skills
- Experience managing a foodservice program and a kitchen, including ordering food
- Familiarity with CACFP nutrition guidelines is considered a plus
- Pass NYC Department of Health’s Comprehensive Background Check
- Must be Covid vaccinated
