Early Head Start Teacher

The Early Head Start Teacher supports BSECDC’s mission to make a difference in the lives of children,
their families, and communities through the delivery of high-quality early education and child development
services that promote children’s school readiness through growth and development across all
developmental domains. The Early Head Start Teacher will work with two year olds and will adhere to all
federal, state, and local regulations, as well as BSECDC program policies, procedures, and administrative
guidance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Implement a well-organized learning environment with developmentally appropriate schedules,
lesson plans, and indoor/outdoor experiences that promote choice, play, exploration, and
experimentation.
● Develop and implement weekly, individualized lesson plans based on the curriculum to support
physical, social-emotional, approaches to learning, language, and cognitive development.
● Support English language development for dual language learners, recognizing bilingualism as a
strength.
● Ensure the environment and lessons reflect the diversity of children and families served.
● Use nurturing, responsive teaching practices to promote critical thinking, inquiry-based learning,
STEM, literacy, social-emotional development, and values like tolerance and respect.
● Use positive guidance strategies for a peaceful classroom where children resolve conflicts using
language.
● Expose children to diverse cultural lifestyles, genders, and sexual orientations through stories and
discussions.
● Plan and communicate effectively with all classroom staff (assistant teacher, special education,
volunteers, interns).
● Establish collaborative relationships with families while maintaining professional boundaries,
encouraging input and two-way communication.
● Conduct two home visits and two parent-teacher conferences per child annually.
● Adhere to a posted daily schedule including sufficient time for routines (nap/rest, meals, hygiene, transitions).
● Ensure daily oral hygiene education (tooth brushing, activities).
● Facilitate healthy eating habits through family-style meals, with adults eating alongside children.
● Conduct required screenings and ongoing assessments, using data to inform individualized
instruction and measure progress toward School Readiness Goals.
● Monitor daily attendance and communicate when a child needs additional supports.
● Assist with tracking daily meal counts for the CACFP program, as requested.
● Maintain active supervision, group size, and ratios at all times, indoors and outdoors.
● Maintain a safe and healthy environment, following all rules for food allergies, universal
precautions, and personal hygiene.
● Maintain consistent attendance for continuity of care.
● Participate in required staff meetings, training, coaching, workshops, and development programs.
● Ensure complete, accurate, and timely completion of all required documentation and paperwork.
● Follow all applicable BSECDC policies and procedures, including the Standards of Conduct to
safeguard children.
● Fully implement all applicable federal, state, and local laws/regulations (Head Start Performance
Standards, Head Start Act, IDEA, IFSP, FERPA, ACYFIM, Department of Education, NYC DOHMH
Licensing Code Article 47 NAEYC).
● Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
● CDA Credential or
● Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education,
● Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, organizational, written, verbal),
● Proficiency with Google and Microsoft Office/Word/Excel.

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum two years working with infants and toddlers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to walk, sit, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; regularly lift/move up to 40
lbs. and frequently lift/move up to 50 lbs; use hands/fingers, reach with hands/arms, talk and hear; and
have specific vision abilities (close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, focus adjustment).
