About the Role

Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of the Head Start Teacher shall focus on implementing a comprehensive, early childhood development classroom as required by the East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc., DOE and the Head Start Performance Head Start in collaboration with other Head Start staff, families, and community partners. The Head Start teacher is expected to:
Duties_;
1. Plan and provide learning opportunities to students which support growth in the areas of cognition. early literacy and language, social development, play skills, fine and gross motor development, fine arts, adaptive/self-care skills, health and nutrition.
2. Implement a developmentally appropriate and ongoing assessment of student progress.
3. Follow Head Start and DOE policies for referring children for further diagnostic evaluation when necessary.
4. Communicate with Head Start families on a regular basis via home visits, parent
conferences, written materials and informal personal and telephone contacts.
5. Promote and model good health and nutrition practices to children and families.
6. Monitor the health and safety of students while at school.
7. Use appropriate guidance strategies to help children learn socially acceptable behavior.
8. Maintain written reports and records as required by East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc. Bilingual Head Start and the DOE.
9. Maintain a positive working relationship with students, families, colleagues, and community members that will promote effective communication and collaboration.
10. Actively seek to involve parent and families in the educational process and development of their children.
11. Maintain the confidentiality of students and families as set forth in East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc. and Bilingual Head Start policies.
12. Provide appropriate work direction and oversee the daily responsibilities of the Head Start Assistant Teacher and classroom volunteers.
13. Participate in required staff meetings and staff development opportunities.

14. Maintain knowledge in the current trends and research in the field of early childhood education.
15. Prepare and submit weekly lesson plans and individualization plans to the Educational Director at the beginning of each week.
16. Responsible for group and subgroup instructions which takes into account the individual differences and needs of the children's culture, language, social abilities and learning needs.
17. Encourages children to organize their experiences and understand concepts in all curriculum areas according to the individual development levels of the children.
18. Provides a balance program of open learning and structured experiences.
19. Plans trips and other special events with assistant, and parents in accordance with the Head Start Procedures and objectives.
20. Holds weekly meetings with the class team to discuss plans and evaluate progress of children and program.
21. Group Teacher schedules with the Assistant Teacher and Social Services home visits according to Head Start procedures.
22. Meets and works closely with the Family Assistant and/or Family Worker in order to provide whatever assistance is needed for the individual children and their families.
23. Keeps a daily record of attendance and submit a monthly CACFP meal court report to the supervisor.
24. Prepares and submits "Accident Report" as soon as possible after the accident occurs.
25. Other duties as assigned by Educational Director and Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree, in Early Childhood or related field of study, NYS Certification in ECE preferred (approved by DOHMH)_An imaginative person with the interest and ability to teach three to five-year-old children with knowledge of recent developments in the field of Early Childhood education particularly as it relates to the proper education of children of low income families. Bilingual skills and/or experience with English Language Learners.
